New School-Wide Compost Delivery Program!

Brackett is a pioneer in waste reduction practices and has inspired other schools in Arlington and the surrounding communities to engage in similar efforts.

Please read the letter below from Brackett principal, Mrs. Zerchykov, about the details of our lunch room waste reduction program. Part of the program is to deliver compost buckets and trays to Whole Foods Arlington. We need help from Brackett Families to keep this program going.

We're asking each classroom to be responsible for 1-2 weeks throughout the year to deliver our compost buckets and trays to Whole Foods. Details are included in the sign up link below.

Dear Brackett Families,

Did you know that your children are sorting their lunchroom waste each day into recycling, trash, and compost bins? By doing this, they are diverting over 10,000 pounds of food waste from the school’s waste stream each year!

Did you also know that less than two years ago, after years of Brackett community advocacy, food services changed from Styrofoam to compostable trays.  Our efforts have removed over 500 bags of trash per year from the waste stream?

We take pride in this pioneering waste reduction program, which has inspired other schools in Arlington and the surrounding communities to engage in similar efforts.

Now we need your support to keep this program alive!

When we began our composting program, we processed our lunchroom food waste in on site tumblers managed by parent volunteers and used for the school grounds.  Now the compost in our tumblers will be used for the kindergarten’s Full Circle Garden (funded by the Arlington Education Foundation, the Brackett PTO and the Brackett After School Program, and located just outside the kindergarten classrooms).

Partnering with Whole Foods Arlington two years ago enabled us to compost the new lunch trays and all food waste, including meat and dairy products. Whole Foods takes our compost to the Bio-Digester in Marlborough and to local farms.

To date, the delivery of our compost buckets and trays to Whole Foods has been supported by a very small handful of parent volunteers, a model that is no longer sustainable.

The town of Arlington supports the work we do and we are in dialogue with DPW staff about assisting the schools in our efforts, particularly around compost storage and delivery to processing sites.

However, in the short term, we are asking the whole Brackett community to participate in keeping this important work going.

Each classroom will be responsible for 1-2 weeks throughout the year to deliver our compost buckets and trays to Whole Foods. Details will be included in the sign up link you will receive from your room parents.
